Acting on a PIL, the Supreme Court of India has asked Mulayam Singh...

.

Not just Mulayam

8226; Acting on a PIL, the Supreme Court of India has asked Mulayam Singh, the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh to submit his income and property returns for six years starting from the year 2001. It is good that the Supreme Court has done so. Mulayam Singh, though defiant and accusing the Congress of hatching a conspiracy against him is nervous. It will be good if the Supreme Court asks the chief ministers of all the states to submit their income and property returns for the same period. High courts can do the same in respect of ministers in their respective states. Stories of politicians wallowing in corruption have been doing the rounds for years. It will be in the interest of the nation if the Supreme Court could mount an intensive reality check.

Take down OPEC

8226; The government is constrained to raise the price of petrol and diesel, in view of spiralling crude price in the international market. However, it should also try to understand what causes this unprecedented hike in global crude price, and work towards long-term solution. Here is the global lowdown. The cartel of OPEC, which controls two-thirds of world oil reserves but produces only one-third of world supplies. OPEC capping the production for all member countries despite sharp increase in demand is responsible for the unprecedented increase in oil price. Oil is world8217;s only commodity which is being irresponsibly controlled by this cartel. Developing countries like India should work with international forums to dismantle OPEC.

Standing on merit

8226; It was a delight to read Gautam Kumar article IE, June 8. A whole lot of us are with him on this and agree with him when he says the younger generation believes in equality, hard work and dedication as the recipe for success. We don8217;t want to be divided on lines of caste or creed. It is intelligence, perseverance and merit that we stand on. When our country is faring so well on the economic front and is poised for further growth, such policies are pernicious. It is a plea to all the leaders/politicians not to exploit the situation for selfish gains.

The country needs well-wishers and patriots to

contribute unselfishly to its development.

New atomic orbit

8226; By proposing to extend 27 OBC reservations to the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research IE, June 7, the UPA government has shined new light on our understanding of atomic physics. Hitherto, atomic electrons have been known to occupy only certain reserved energy levels such as K, L, and M. Arjun Singh et al appear to believe that electrons can also occupy an OBC level. And so India relentlessly marches backwards towards becoming a progressive scientific society!

Irresponsible offer

8226; This is with reference to the statement of BJP general secretary Vinay Katiyar that his party will pay Rs 1 lakh to any civilian who kills a militant in Jammu and Kashmir. This BJP offer is not a responsible one. It8217;s not possible to recognise militants easily, as most of the time they come in disguise. On the other hand, some greedy people may kill innocents and claim they were militants. Katiyar must keep his faith in the state government and the police battling the menace.
