Former World Cup winners France face the grim reality of sitting at home despite the World Cup taking place in the neighbourhood. Group 4 couldn8217;t be tighter, with four teams -Israel, Switzerland, France and Ireland- in contention, separated by two points.

THE SCENARIO

Despite the complications France8217;s job at hand is simple: They should beat Cyprus to ensure at least a play-off spot. France will top the group if they win and Switzerland fail to beat the Republic of Ireland in Dublin. If the Swiss and Irish draw it all boils down to goal difference. If Switzerland win France would need to win by four goals more than the Swiss margin of victory to secure a direct berth.

They are two points adrift of leader Serbia-Montenegro. The Serbs face Bosnia-Herzegovina with a win consigning the Spanish to the play-offs if they see off minnows San Marino. If Serbia draw Spain could claim top spot. But for that they need a five-goal winning margin.
