Saina Nehwal impressed social media by holding a plank in the gym. While she didn’t mention how long she held the plank, her form throughout the posture earned her praise. “Amazing,” one wrote, while another expressed, “Super fitness,” as the camera zooms in and out on her.

Taking a cue from the Olympic champion, we reached out to consultant dietitian and fitness expert Garima Goyal on why good form is essential.

Nehwal’s recent video holding a plank with strong form highlights the importance of “core strength in overall fitness.” “The plank may appear simple, but it is one of the most effective exercises for building core stability, improving spinal alignment and developing muscular endurance. When performed correctly with an engaged core, neutral spine and steady breathing, it activates the abdominals, back, shoulders and hips together, creating a strong foundation for movement,” said Goyal.

A strong core plays a crucial role beyond appearance. According to Goyal, core supports better posture, reduces the risk of lower back pain and improves balance and control during everyday activities. “For an athlete like Nehwal, this strength translates into better power transfer, improved stability and quicker reactions. For others, it helps with tasks such as lifting, walking, exercising, and maintaining balance as the body ages.”

Holding a plank also builds mental resilience. “Staying steady in the position challenges focus and discipline, helping train both the body and mind to work under sustained effort. Gradually increasing plank duration or adding variations can further enhance coordination and functional strength.”

Form is more important than duration. Don’t let the hips sag, or hold your breath, or lock the shoulders, which can strain your joints. Goyal shared that a good plank keeps the spine straight, slightly squeezes the glutes, and positions the shoulders over the elbows.
