Kidney racket busted, 1 arrested

North Dinajpur police busted a kidney trafficking racket and arrested the alleged mastermind from Bindal near Raiganj on Saturday night. Abdul Razzaq was produced in the Raiganj court on Sunday morning and was remanded in judicial custody for 14 days.

Razzaq, a resident of Antara village in Bindal, is suspected of having duped Bindal villagers and stolen their kidneys with the help of doctors in New Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata.

Inspector-in-charge of Raiganj police station, Pradip Chakraborty said: 8220;After Razzaq8217;s arrest, some of his victims approached us and informed about the racket.8221;

A Bindal resident, Chottu Murmu lodged an FIR with the Raiganj police on Sunday evening. It stated that Razzaq had taken him to Kolkata in September 2007 for treatment. He got him admitted to a city hospital, where he was operated upon. Murmu later came to know that his kidney had been removed.

Police said Razzaq has confessed of having stolen kidneys of over 30 people. He would lure people with a promise of providing jobs in metros and then get them admitted to a hospital where they would be operated upon, said police.

The police said Razzaq confessed to running the racket in Kolkata for the last four years. 8220;He had forged connections with hospitals like Woodlands, Bellevue, Apollo and the government-run SSKM,8221; said a police officer.

His network was spread across North and South Dinajpur, Malda and Bihar.
