Khalid Khannouchi ran away from the finest men8217;s marathon field ever assembled on Sunday to win the London marathon in World record time after Paula Radcliffe had come desperately close to breaking the women8217;s mark on her debut.

Khannouchi first dropped Ethiopia8217;s Olympic 10,000 metres champion Haile Gebrselassie, running his first serious marathon, then strode away from five Times world cross country champion, Kenyan Paul Tergat, to win in two hours five minutes 38 seconds.
