MUMBAI, SEPT 20: GN Khalsa and St Xavier's have entered the final of the Inter-college women's basketball tournament. In the semi-finals at Indian Gymkhana today, Khalsa put out defending champions VG Vaze 34-24, while Xavier's defeated RA Podar 39-30.Khalsa had an easy time against Vaze, weakened considerably since National Manisha Khaprekar graduated. The surprise package in the Khalsa offence was junior National Sonali D'Souza, who in the past has been accused of revelling only in defence. Sonali added 11 points to the Khalsa tally, while Quintina Noronha top-scored with 17.Xavier's always had the edge in the second semi-final, thanks to the presence of the dangerous Loveena Figueiredo in their ranks. The short, rugged dynamo did not disappoint. She scored 30 of her team's 39 points, while the experienced of Sangeeta D'Silva kept Xavier's defence together. Sangeeta kept Podar pivot Vandana Subramony quiet, and Vandana had barely opened her account till Sangeeta left the field after committing fivefouls, in the second half. She was glad to see Sangeeta's back, celebrating with three pivoted baskets on the trot. But any hopes Podar harboured of cutting into Xavier's half-time lead of 21-12 were dashed by Loveena's consistent shooting. Ami Momaya waged a lone battle for Podar, scoring 15, including two 3-pointers.RESULTSSEMIS: Khalsa 34 (Quintina Noronha 17, Sonali D'Souza) bt Vaze 24 (Gauri Abhyankar 10) HT 13-5; Xavier's 39 (Loveena Figueiredo 30) bt Podar 30 (Ami Momaya 15) HT 21-12.Yash, Neha champsYash Wagh and Neha Chouhan emerged champions in the midget boys' and girls' sections, respectively, of the District Ranking table tennis tournament at the MIG Cricket Club premises, Bandra (E), today.RESULTSMidget boys (final): Yash Wagh bt Abijit Balani 16-21, 21-9, 23-21.
