KARGIL, JUNE 3: The Kargil Doordarshan Kendra was shelled by Pakistani forces on Wednesday afternoon. Though shelling in Drass came to a temporary halt yesterday morning, artillery attacks intensified in Kargil and Batalik sector.

Police sources said that as soon as a petrol tanker came near the Kargil television centre, a shell hit it. The fire spread rapidly and engulfed the television centre and tower.

There were no reports of casualty in the incident. However, the transmission had not been disrupted, a district administration official said.

Police suspect that some local spying for Pakistan Army directed the fire towards the centre. Meanwhile, the Pakistan artillery guns heavily pounded the Baroo locality here throughout the day. However, the shelling came to a halt in Drass because of bad weather. The infantry operations on the Drass heights had also cooled down as the temperature dipped.

In Batalik, the artillery guns are shelling from both the sides. However, the Army is tight-lipped over the details of the operation going on to push back the infiltrators. Sources said the troops had been able to make advances at least at two places.
