A Fighting unbeaten half century by southpaw Manoj Joglekar and his invaluable 63-run stand for the third wicket with Amol Rane, enabled Shivaji Park Gymkhana SPG score 163-6 in reply to MIG8217;s respectable total of 323 on the second day of the three-day final of the Purshottam Shield cricket tournament at the PJ Hindu Gymkhana, today.

SPG had an early setback when opener Ojas Mehta was leg before to medium pacer Abey Kuruvilla in the very first over before SPG had a run on the board. Pagnis was joined by Joglekar and the two carried the total to 31, before Kuruvilla got his second wicket, trapping Pagnis leg before for 22. Pagnis had four boundaries in his 32-ball innings.

Joglekar then got an able partner in Rane. The pair batted with their heads down and brought the total close to the three-figure mark, when Rane became Kuruvilla8217;s third victim in the same fashion. Rane8217;s steady 35 was studded with six fours off 84 balls.

After the addition of one more run, Kuruvilla trapped captain Pravin Amre infront of the wicket before he could open his account and SPG were struggling at 95-4.

At the other end, Joglekar held the fort and he and Shreyas Khanolkar took the score to 116 when Prashant Shetty brought off a diving catch at silly mid-on to send back Khanolkar of the bowling of off-spinner Faizal Shaikh for 15.

Railways Ranji all-rounder Sanjay Bangar, who was shaping well, was caught behind off Kuruvilla for 11. At close, Joglekar was batting on 54 off 198 balls with a six and six fours and Bhimesh Shah on 15 with one six and a four. Kuruvilla finished the day with 5-65 in 24 overs.

In the morning, MIG resuming at 277-7, went on to make 323 with Satish Samant contributing an unbeaten 64 with a six and six boundary hits off 92 balls. All the three wickets which fell today were captured by off-spinner Bhimesh Shah for 64 runs.

Maccabbi-Telaviv top

Maccabbi-Telaviv Dadar beat Rashtriya Club Kalyan 3-2 in the final of the Mayor8217;s Cup Open Rink football tournament, organised by Client Link Services and Lourdes Church Kalyan.

The top scorer was Mario Rodrigues, best player was Randall Pereira, best team were Vincentians Khar and the sportsmanship award went to Dennis Menezes. Francis Fernandes, Carlton Ferrao and Abbas Rizvi were adjudged the most promising players.

The competition was jointly sponsored by Client Link Services, Nestle, Suman Motels and Aptech, Dombivali.

Sunil Machhar8217;s lead

Sunil Machhar8217;s Mumbai were leading with 232 VPs midway through the quarter-finals of the Selection trials to pick the Indian Bridge team for the Bridge Federation of Asia and Middle East Championships.

After four rounds of 12 boards each, Sunil Machhar, comprising Sunil Machhar, R Sreedharan, A Khare, RTolani, V Desai and S Vaidya, had pulled five VPs clear of second-placed Railways 227.

The top four teams at the end of the seven-round league will advance to the semi-finals, which will be played over 96 boards.

Following Railways in third place were the fancied India Blue with 214 VPs and National champions CV Rao were lying fourth with 208 Vps.

Also in the reckoning, with three rounds to go, are Sara-k 199 and Well Knit 196.
