A day after two workers died as a goods lift collapsed inside a ceramic crockery factory in Outer Delhi’s Samaypur on Thursday evening, police have booked the factory owner’s daughter for allegedly ignoring a technical fault in the lift despite repeated complaints from workers, officers said.

According to the FIR, which was registered on the complaint of Lal Bahadur, a power press operator at the factory, the lift had been facing technical problems for several months. However, the issues about the lift flagged by the workers were allegedly ignored, the FIR has stated.

The police said the incident occurred on Wednesday at around 5.20 pm, when they received a call informing them that a lift had broken down and collapsed inside a factory in Samaypur Badli, leaving two workers seriously injured.

By the time police reached the factory Neha Enterprises, located in Gali No 9., both the injured workers identified as Hariom (32) and Sanjay Mishra (45) were already taken to the hospital, where the duo were declared dead.

“Preliminary investigation revealed that both workers were using the goods lift to transport materials between different floors of the factory when the lift cable snapped, causing the lift to crash down. The workers sustained critical injuries and later succumbed while being taken to the hospital. Based on the statement of an eyewitness, police registered a case of death due to negligence,” an officer said.

During the investigation, it was found that the lift had not been properly maintained, which led to the fatal accident, he added.

During inquiry, police discovered that the factory originally belonged to one Ram Naresh Verma. Following his demise four months ago, his daughter Neha Verma took over the operations of the factory, officers said. Police have also detained Neha, they added.

According to the family members of the deceased, Sanjay and Hariom — residents of Samaypur Badli — were the sole earning members of their families. Sanjay is survived by his wife and two sons, aged 24 and 17. His brother, Ram Anik, said that Sanjay’s wife was suffering from polio.

As per family members, Sanjay earned around Rs 15,000 per month, most of which was spent on his wife’s medical treatment. Sanjay’s eldest son is supporting the family by teaching children while pursuing a computer course, his family said. His second son is still in school.

Hariom, meanwhile, is survived by his wife and two children, aged eight and nine.
