City coaches for clinic

MUMBAI: Mumbai-based coaches Clarence Lobo (Tatas) and Mukul Pandey (Customs) have been selected by the Bombay Hockey Association (BHA) to attend a hockey coaching clinic to be run by Dutch legend Floris-Jan Bovelander in New Delhi.

Deepak Khanolkar, director of ACOSA, coordinators and organisers of the clinic, provided the information to The Indian Express today.

The clinic is being held under the auspices of the Indian Hockey Federation and supported by the Government and the Sports Authority of India.

Bovelander will address coaches from April 24 followed by sessions with the senior and junior natioal squads in a clinic lasting five days. Lobo and Pandey are among 25 coaches from all over the country to attend.

Ban on ivory

MUMBAI: The All-India Carrom Federation has henceforth decided to ban ivory strikers by their players due to the initiative taken by Maneka Gandhi, minister of welfare, Government of India.

The Federation hashonoured her view and banned the use of ivory-made strikers in the carrom tournaments-championships or any activities held in India. It may be noted that possession of keeping ivory material may attract the provision of Rs 25,000 cash or six months jail or both.

Nationals put off

HYDERABAD: The 15th Sub-Junior National kabaddi championship for boys and girls scheduled to be held here from April 27 to 30, has been postponed in view of the examinations for most of the players.

The championship will be held from May 10 to 13, Hyderabad Kabaddi Association president Kotha Das Goud said.

Indian for Go

NEW DELHI: India will participate in the 20th World Amateur Go Championship to be held in Japan in June.

Arun Sagar, an amateur Go player, will become the first player to represent India in the four-day event starting from June 2, Teruaki Horiuchi, second secretary in embassy of Japan announced here.
