Paes-Bhupathi lose in semis

MUMBAI: Top- seeded Indian pair of Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi lost in the semi-finals of the $ 2.5 million Indianwells Super 9 tennis tournament on Saturday, according to information reaching here.

Paes-Bhupathi went down to E Ferreira and Rick Leach 6-3, 6-2. The Indians’ last ATP double title had come in November ’98 when they won the $ 2.5 million Paris Super 9 beating Jacob Eltingh and Paul Haarhuis. Since then, the Indians lost in the Australian Open final in January and crashed out in the quarter-finals of the Dubai Open last month.

MUMBAI: The National cricket selectors are to meet here on Monday to choose the Indian captain and team for the Triangular limited overs series commencing on March 19.

Since India’s first two matches in the series are to be held in the space of three days — March 22 against Sri Lanka at Nagpur and March 24 against Pakistan at Jaipur — the indications are that the squad to be picked would be for thesetwo matches.

Santosh delayed

COIMBATORE: With Daman and Diu deciding not to participate, the cluster matches of the BPCL 55th National Football Championship for Santosh Trophy, scheduled to begin here on March 17, will now be played from March 19.

The revised fixtures: March 19 Assam vs Pondicherry; March 20 Sikkim vs Pondicherry; March 21 Nagaland vs Bihar; March 22 Assam vs Sikkim; March 23 Bihar vs Kerala; March 25 Kerala vs Nagaland.

Indian Bank win

CHENNAI: Indian Bank won the ninth Inter-Bank Chess title for a record eighth time with a tally of 21 points here today. Indian Bank comprising IM Sudhakar Babu (5.5), IM GB Prakash (5.5), KV Shantaram and V Hariharan (5), tallied 21 points to push Canara Bank — RR Vasudevan and SN Ravishankar (4.5), Manohar Hegde and MG Muthiah (4) — to the second spot.
