Indian boxer in last eightCALCUTTA: India8217;s Mohammad Ali Qamar managed to reach the last-eight stage in the light-fly weight section of the 10th World under-19 Boxing Championships, held at Buenos Aries from November 6 to 16. India had two representatives in this meet with Bhagarajan losing in the first round of feather weight.

Qamar, just above 18 years, defeated the Asian youth champion in the light-fly weight category, Nanam Kuk of Korea, 6-5 in the first round. In the quarter-final, he narrowly lost 8-9 to Russian Alexander Bakhtin.

BSF claim Nehru hockey title

NEW DELHI: Border Security Force defeated Punjab and Sind Bank 2-1 in a subdued all-Jalandhar final to claim their seventh title in the 35th Nehru-ONGC Senior Hockey Tournament at the National Stadium here on Tuesday.

Shinu Herenz converted BSF8217;s first penalty corner in the 20th minute to put them ahead and Habil Topno added another in the 55th minute before Parminder Singh pulled one back for the Bankmen two minuteslater.

Nirupama improves ranking to 174

NEW DELHI: Nirupama Vaidyanathan has ended 1998 with a career-best ranking of 174, according to the latest Women8217;s Tennis Association World rankings released at Miami, Florida on Monday.

The 21-year-old has jumped 13 places from last week8217;s standing of 187 in the year-end rankings and has 123 WTA points.
