An Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent shot a man in the leg in Minneapolis after allegedly being attacked with a shovel and broom handle prompting a fresh round of protests in the city, a week after another federal agent fatally shot a woman in the head.

According to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), federal officers were conducting a “targeted traffic stop” when a Venezuelan national was shot in the leg after he allegedly assaulted an ICE agent and resisted arrest. US officials said the man was shot after the ICE agent was attacked with a shovel.

Detailing about the incident, the city of Minneapolis in a post on X said the injured individual was transported to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. “This evening, one adult male was shot by federal immigration enforcement agents in the 600 block of 24th Avenue North,” it added.

The incident raised the sense of fear and anger radiating across the city as fresh clashes broke out between protesters and law enforcement officials near the incident as Minneapolis city officials appealed for calm. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey said the situation in the city was “unsustainable”.

“This is an impossible situation that our city is presently being put in and at the same time we are trying to find a way forward to keep people safe, to protect our neighbors, to maintain order,” Mayor Frey said.

Amid US President Donald Trump administration’s immigration crackdown, tensions have remained high in Minneapolis since the January 7 fatal shooting of 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good by an ICE agent.

Protesters gathered near the incident site on Wednesday and demanded that immigration agents leave the city as federal agents, who were wearing gas masks and helmets, fired tear gas as protesters threw stones and shot fireworks.

The gathering was called unlawful assembly by the Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara during a press briefing and said that “people need to leave”.
