An emotional audio clip circulating widely on social media has brought renewed attention to the mysterious disappearance of Sarabjeet Kaur, a Sikh devotee from Amanipur village in Kapurthala district on the Indian side of Punjab, who went missing in Pakistan during a religious pilgrimage last year. Later, reports of her wedding to a Pakistani man surfaced.

In the purported audio, Sarabjeet can be heard pleading with her former husband to take her back to India, claiming that she was being harassed in Pakistan.

In the audio clip, she also requests him not to scold her after her return, stating she is already extremely upset and broken. She also claims that she has done everything for him and their children, including building a large house, but is now left with nothing, reported PTI.

Sarabjeet, who contracted marriage with a local Muslim, Nasir Hussain of Sheikhupura district, some 50 kms from Lahore, a day after she arrived in Pakistan on November 4, was arrested and sent to a government-run shelter home in Lahore.

Later, Kaur and Hussain filed a petition in the Lahore High Court complaining that the police had conducted an illegal raid at their house in Farooqabad, Sheikhupura, and pressured them to end the marriage. Lahore High Court Justice Farooq Haider ordered the police to stop harassing the couple.

“Instead of following the court order, the Punjab police apprehended the couple and sent Ms Kaur to Darul Aman (government-run shelter home) in Lahore,” the source in the Punjab government told PTI. He said the authorities want to deport Kaur while her husband is in police custody facing a case.

“The authorities already made an attempt to deport Kaur but failed due to the closure of the Wagah-Attari border,” he said.

In the audio clip, Sarabjeet tells her former husband that despite being financially well-off in India, she is now not receiving even a single rupee in Pakistan. She further alleges that Nasir Hussain’s wife deceived her and left her isolated. In the audio, she also expresses fear for her life, stating that she had earlier consumed a poisonous substance (when she was in India) and could do so again if she is harassed after her return to India.

The woman says she is missing her children terribly and asks her husband to tell them that their mother is very unhappy. She also complains of extreme neglect, claiming that she does not even have warm clothes or shoes, which she says went missing after she arrived in Pakistan.

Sarabjeet Kaur had travelled to Pakistan as part of a 1,932-member Indian Sikh jatha that crossed the Attari-Wagah border on November 4 to attend the 556th birth anniversary celebrations of Guru Nanak Dev. The 10-day pilgrimage included visits to historic Sikh shrines such as Gurdwara Panja Sahib (Hasan Abdal), Gurdwara Sacha Sauda (Farooqabad) and Gurdwara Darbar Sahib, Kartarpur.

While the jatha returned to India on November 13, Sarabjeet did not come back with the group.
