
Big Punjab team for Natl Games
CHANDIGARH: Punjab will field a 500-strong contingent for participation in all but one of the 27 disciplines at the fifth national games to be held in Imphal from October 4 to 14, the state Olympic Association announced today.
The POA said the executive committee at its meeting chaired by president Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa decided not to take part in Sepak Takraw.
Coaching camps would be organised in August and September and the contingent would leave in two batches.

NEW DELHI: Railways represented by SK Bhattacharjee, AK Das, S Roy, M Mukherjee, Rana Roy and AK Mukherjee beat Acla Asansol by 147 IMP to clinch the team title in the Modipon Gold Cup bridge championship here today.

Ali8217;s teamwins
GURGAON: Yusuf Ali of Calcutta scored 16 points to lead his team to victory in the Pro-Am event of the Rs 15 lakh Wills Masters at the par-72 7114-yard Classic golf resort here today.
Ali, who earned Rs 10,000 for his effort, came up with a good performance to help his team, comprising Ajit Sayal, V Shrivastava, Vinod Sobti and Arvinder Singh to triumph in the event in which a professional golfer teams up with four amateurs.
State swimming
PUNE: The cream of swimmers from all over state will be vying for honours in the prestigious Maharashtra State Swimming Champioship to be hosted by the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation PCMC at the Anna Saheb Magar pool in Pimpri from August 14 to 17.
For the first time, the championship is being held in seniors, juniors and sub-junior categories a record number of 516 entries from 14 affiliated districts for the PCMC Mayors Trophy.
No shift sought8217;
CHENNAI: Chief coach of the senior hockey team MK Kaushik did not want theongoing conditioning camp at Sai Centre, Bangalore for the Indian team bound for Commonwealth Games at Kuala Lumpur, to be shifted to Chennai as programmed earlier.
In a letter to Indian Hockey Federation IHF secretary K Jyothikumar, Kaushik said since there was only limited time available, he did not want to shift the camp, as it would definitely disturb the concentration of the team.
Coach consulted
CHENNAI: Indian Hockey Federation IHF secrfetary K Jyothikumaran today said the 16-member Indian team for the Commonwealth Games had been selected purely on the advice of newly elected national coach MK Kaushik.
Jyothikumaran said for the first time, the selections were made in a systematic manner. 8220;We did not overrule any of Kaushik8217;s suggestions,8221; he added.
