Bhupathi fails to make main draw

NEW DELHI: Mahesh Bhupathi failed to make the main draw of the Australian Open losing in the second round of the qualifying tournament. According to reports reaching here, he lost to Italian Marzio Martelli 3-6, 3-6. Earlier Bhupathi beat American Wynn Criswell 7-5, 6-3 in the first round.

Meanwhile, Leander Paes, who got the wild card reserved for Asians, has a tough first round match against Swede Mikael Tillstrom, ranked 84. Tillstrom had won the Gold Flake Open in Chennai last year.

Rueb wins double

INDORE: Fifth seed Andrew Rueb of US clinched a golden double in the ITF men8217;s Future Tennis Circuit at Yeshwant Club here on Friday. In a lacklustre singles final, Rueb outclassed club mate Todd Meringoff 6-3, 6-4. He then combined with Ali Hamadeh of Lebanon to win the doubles title, beating the Israeli pair of Jonathan Erlich and Noam Okun 7-7 7-3, 6-4.

Andrew Rueb dominated throughout the singles8217; final, which lasted for 73 minutes. Unseeded Meringoff8217;s dream run came to an end as he was totally outlasted by Rueb8217;s power game.

Haryana 185-8

NAGPUR: A fine half-century by Ishan Ganda enabled Haryana post 185 for 8 on the opening day of the three-day final against Punjab in Vijay Merchant Trophy Cricket Championship U-16, at the Vidarbha Cricket Association grounds here on Friday.

Brief Scores: Haryana 185-8 I Ganda 50, B Sharma 30, Sumeet Sharma 21; Sandeep Sawal 3-65.

CHENNAI: Royal Madras Yacht Club and Naval Sailing Club Mumbai today qualified to the semi-finals of the All India Yachting team racing Championship held here. The two teams maintained their clean slate in the championship so far to top their respective groups. The Madras Club beat GYA, the Naval Sailing Club emerged victorious over CESC B.

TN drub state boys

TIRUPATI: Karnataka, UP and TN have qualified for the quarter finals of the eighth Amarraja National Sub-Junior Hockey here on Friday. TN defeated Maharashtra 15-0.
