Mukesh apologies to IHF, IA
HYDERABAD: Veteran right winger Mukesh Kumar has tendered an apology to the Indian Hockey Federation IHF and his employers Indian Airlines for leaving for theMalaysian League despite being selected in the squad that is currently touring Australia.
He contended that he was unaware of his selection when he left to play in the league but has apologised for not taking prior permission to play in Malaysia. He has since returned home midway through the league engagements in Kuala Lumpur.
Rallyist critically injured in a fall
KOCHI: The two-wheeler part of the Popular Rally ran a turbulent course in the rocky terrain near Illithodu on Saturday and resulted in a major accident to one of the contestants.
TA Balaram Thrissur on a Suzuki Shogun, was tossed off his bike following a puncture to the back tyre and was critically injured. The scan report of Balaram, 35, a professional photographer, showed serious injuries and the doctor at the casualty wing, said Balaram8217;s abdomen was enlarged and the lower portion of his body was paralysed.
Jacques Kallis bags Ceat Award
MUMBAI: South African all-rounder Jacques Kallis has bagged the CeatInternational Cricketer Of The Year Award for 1998-99 and would receive the Rs five lakh award at Nairobi on October 1 during the LG Cup four-nation cricket tournament.
The South African team, who are the winners of the Team of the year8217; award, would be presented with a cash prize of Rs 10 lakh at the same function.

MARGAO: Dempo Sports Club came back from behind to hold Vasco to a 1-1 draw in an unimpressive match that saw the former failing to convert a penalty, in the second edition of the Director8217;s Special Professional league here today. Both goals were scored in the second half through defensive lapses. Vasco scored in the 53rd minute through Gregory Clark and Dempo equalised in the 70th minute throughRemus Gomes.
Taxing setback for Sanchez-Vicario
BARCELONA: Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario lost a round in her battle to avoid paying 7.5 million about Rs 32.25 crore in delinquent taxes and penalties. A Spanish Court ruled that tax inspectors, who searched a house in Barcelona owned by Sanchez-Vicario8217;s family in 1995 did not trespass. Sanchez-Vicario had argued that the search was illegal because the inspectors did not have a warrant. But the Supreme Court of Catalonia said the inspectors had verbal permission from her father, who also is her agent. That search was part of tax authorities8217; broader drive to force Sanchez-Vicario to pay 629 million pesetas about Rs 16.77 crore in back taxes for the period 1989-1993, plus a fine of 580 million pesetas about Rs. 15.48 crore.
