CHANDIGARH, Aug 16: A number of functions were organised at various places in the City to celebrate the Independence Day.

Members of the Lions Club Chandigarh Host celebrated the day in Lions Bhawan, Sector 18-D. President of the club R K Rana unfurled the national flag. The deaf and dumb students of the school run by the club presented a colourful cultural programme. According to Dharam Vir Sharma of the club, members distributed ties, socks, belts and sweets among the students on the occasion.

Freedom fighter H S Cheema unfurled the flag at the function organised by the Residents Welfare Society of Central Government Employees Residential Colony, Sector 7. According to a statement issued by Sunil Soni of the Society, Children of Government High School, Sector 7 presented a cultural programme. Prizes were given away to the children by H S Cheema, D R Aneja, D S Doad and C R Garg and sweets were distributed.

A function was also organised at Dr. Ambedkar Institute of Hotel Management Catering and Nutrition here. The principal, Dr Navin Kumar Nanchahal, hoisted the flag. A community lunch for students and staff was hosted on the occasion and a cultural programme was also organised.

A function was organised in the office of the Regional Provident Fund Commissioner, to mark the Day. Commissioner M. L. Meena, distributed annual account slips to the employees and passbooks, cheques and PPOs to the employees, pensioners and widows.

Lions Club Chandigarh Shivalik celebrated the Day at Government High School in village Dadu Majra. The flag was unfurled by region chairman R K Gupta. According to a statement issued by Satish Seth, the club adopted five orphans studying in the school.

It also gave full fee for 67 poor students; full fee and stationary for students who stood first in Class V and Class VIII in the school till the time they continued their studies. The Electricity Department of the Punjab Public Works Department Building and Roads branch illuminated the Punjab Mini Secretariat to celebrate the Day.

Haryana Panjabi Sahitya Akademi arranged a Kavi Darbar at Red Bishop in Panchkula to mark the Day. Gurcharan Singh, an eminent Punjab scholar, presided over the function. About 25 poets from Punjab and Chandigarh took part in the darbar, including Kewal Manak Puri, Gurcharan Singh Saki, Harbhajan Singh Renu, Sudarshan Walia, Gurbux Saini and Manjit Kaur. School children rendered the popular Punjabi song, Charkha chanan da, on the occasion.
