Tom Hanks has earned two Oscars and grossed close to $3 billion at the box office in a career spanning almost 25 years — but the Forrest Gump star says he rates his own performances a paltry ‘‘C’’.
‘‘I would give myself a ‘C’ in every movie I’ve ever been in. I’m the least objective human being to look at my own work,’’ he told reporters at the Cannes film festival, where The Ladykillers is competing for the Palme D’Or best film award.
In the movie, Hanks plays Professor Goldthwait Higginson Dorr III, a charlatan who leads a gang of inept criminals in robbing a floating casino in Mississippi, but is ultimately thwarted by his unassuming landlady. Directed by Cannes favourites Joel and Ethan Coen, the film is a loose remake of the classic 1955 comedy starring Alec Guinness. The action has been transferred to the modern-day Deep South.
In his first ever visit to the French Riviera resort, Hanks charmed the gallery with self-deprecating banter. ‘‘The last thing I would have wanted was to have seen the film and have it entering into my head in some way that would either censor me or would somehow inadvertently make me imitate the great Sir Alec Guinness,’’ he said. —(Reuters)
