The Supreme Court directed that power supply to Shriram Foods and Fertilisers Industries not be cut off by the Delhi Electric Supply Undertaking and the Municipal Corporation. The Chief Justice, P N Bhagwati, and Justice G L Oza, sitting in chambers, passed this order when the company moved a petition before them during the lunch recess.
India concerned about Libya
India views the Libyan crisis “with great concern as it raised tensions within the region” and as it “was not conducive to international peace and stability”. This perception was conveyed by the Minister of State for External Affairs, K R Narayanan, in New Delhi, to a delegation of Arab ambassadors who had called on him to express their anxiety over threats of use of force against Libya. While voicing India’s concerns over the developments, Narayanan expressed the hope that no precipitate steps would be taken.
McDowell’s tax evasion case
The income tax department in Bombay, at the instance of the Madras IT commissioner, has launched proceedings against leading beverage manufacturer McDowell’s to recover tax arrears of Rs 6 crore. The Madras-based company has not filed returns for quite some time, it is learnt.
Coup foiled in South Yemen
Security forces in South Yemen foiled a coup attempt and bid to assassinate President Ali Nasir Mohammed, the official Aden Radio said. It said four key plotters, including Vice-President Ali Ahmed Nasir Antar and former president Abdul-Fatah Ismail, were executed after a summary trial by a special committee of the ruling Yemeni Socialist Party (YSP).
