MUMBAI, AUG 4: The Sena-BJP government today asked the Commissioners, Superintendents of Police and district collectors to invoke the provisions of Essential Commodities Act to ensure steady supply of essential commodities.

8220;Despite the fact that the indefinite strike launched by the transporters entered the fourth day today, we will take all steps to ensure there is no disruption in supply of essential commodities. Instructions have been given to officials to immediately proceed against such persons found disrupting or trying to disrupt supply of essential commodities under the provisions of law,8221; Chief Secretary Arun Bongirwar said. He clarified any obstruction or interruptions caused by any direct or indirect means in the process or to a person engaged in the process of lifting, transportation and distribution of essential commodities should be treated as an offence under the Essential Commodities Act as well as the Prevention of Marketing and Maintenance of Supplies of Essential Commodities Act.

Inan identical circular sent to district officials, Bongirwar said in case contractors appointed by the government or collectors for the movement of foodgrains and essential commodities join the strike, action should be taken against them in accordance with provisions of the Essential Commodities Act. Simultaneously, all such erring transporters and contractors should be blacklisted for the award of future contracts, he said. Collectors have been directed to maintain adequate supply of milk with the help of cooperative milk societies. 8220;Wherever required, adequate police protection should be provided to milk vans and tankers and also ensure that milk booths are open all day,8221; Bongirwar said.

In addition, as per the revised instruction of the transport department, Bongirwar said private cars, taxis, autorickshaws, buses and stage carriage vehicles have been permitted to carry essential goods. 8220;For steady supply of essential commodities, we have sought the help of both Central and Western Railways. We haverequested them that during the strike period, vegetables and essential commodities should be allowed to be carried not only in the luggage compartments, but in other bogies also. Both Central as well as Western Railway officials have agreed to issue necessary instructions,quot; he said.
