PANAJI, June 23: Malaria has acquired epidemic proportions in Goa. Health authorities confirm that the incidence of the disease was showing an upward trend. Not only the urban centres like Panaji have become prone to malaria but the disease has also spread to the beach villages of Candolim and Calangute which are the biggest tourist attractions. It is feared that if the State authorities fail to curb the spread of disease, tourism might be affected.
The State authorities assure that there has been no let up in the drive to combat malaria. The drive, however, is yet to show results.
In 1988, the worst year for Goa as far as malaria was concerned, the State recorded 6,700 cases. Then for sometime it looked like the disease was contained. But last year again the disease returned with a vengeance, recording close to 5,000 cases and half a dozen deaths.
As things stand the current year could well see a further spurt as during the last five months 5,000 cases of malaria are already recorded, even though the monsoon when malaria cases reach a peak has just begun.
State Chief Malaria Control officer Dr J Parob told The Indian Express that there has been no letup in the drive against malaria but says if it has to be more effective, cooperation of other State agencies, including panchayats, is needed.
