AHMEDABAD, Nov 11: Four people were killed and at least 16 injured, seven of them seriously, on Thursday evening in a collision between a jeep and a Gujarat State Transport Corporation bus near Dehgam. Some of the injured were admitted to the civil hospital and Shardaben hospital in Ahmedabad, while others reportedly went to private clinics.
The accident occurred near Sonarda village on the Dehgam-Naroda highway when the jeep (GJ-1 HH-943), carrying reportedly more than 15 people, collided with the GSRTC bus (GJ-18 V-1514) on its way from Talod to Ahmedabad. The jeep was trying to overtake the bus on the highway and lost control, which caused the accident, the police said.
This is reportedly the fourth accident a State Transport bus has been involved in in two days; another accident occurred near Sanand on Thursday, sources in the GSRTC said.
While most of the injured were travelling in the jeep, one bus passenger was injured, according to sources. Police and doctors from Ahmedabad rushed to the spot following the report of the accident, and brought in the patients. The bus driver, with batch number 2076, is absconding, police said.
“We were called up by the hospital authorities so we came in,” said a relative of Dahyabhai. “Most of the patients could mention their names before they became unconscious,” said a staff nurse. The injured at civil hospital have head and bone injuries, and were being operated on.
Among those who died were Sonalben Nayanbhai Nai, Nayanbhai Ghyanshyam Nai, Virmji Jivaji Thakore (who died at the Shardaben Hospital) and an unidentified woman in her 40’s (who died at Civil Hospital). Virmji Thakore was brought dead at the Shardaben Hospital after he received head injuries.
