VADODARA, June 7: About 55 per cent of the examinees cleared the SSC examinations this year 8212; 10 per cent more than last year 8212; the results of which were declared on Monday. Girls continued to have an edge over boys: 61 per cent of them passed the examination in comparison to 52.53 per cent of the boys.

Vadodara turned in an above-average performance in the examinations, with two of the top three positions going to students of the University Experimental School and Alembic Vidyalay. The State topper, however, was Shruti Sangani of Diwan Ballubhai Madhyamik Shala, Ahmedabad, with 95.86 per cent.

As many as 19 students shared the top 10 positions in the State. While Deepsha Shah of University Experimental School came second with 95.43 per cent, the third position was shared by Himani Shah of Alembic Vidyalay and Radha Teredesai of the University Experimental School with 95.29 per cent.

The best results were produced by the Dhinoj centre, where 88.92 of the examinees cleared the examinations. The Chhala centre was the least envied, with just 15.64 per cent of its examinees passing out. Both Dhinoj and Chhal are in North Gujarat.

A total of 5,60,715 students from 324 centres had applied for the examinations; 5,47,067 appeared for them. Of them, 3,05,206 cleared the examinations. While 3,37,385 boys appeared for the examinations, 1,77,212 cleared them. The girl examinees were 2,09,684 in number; 1,28,054 of them passed.

Apart from the overall pass percentage 8212; it was 45.16 per cent last year 8212; the pass percentage of neighbouring districts, too, was better this year. While 70.8 per cent of the Anand examinees passed, the figures for Vallabh Vidyanagar and Vasad were 67.61 per cent and 58.17 per cent respectively.

Talking about the results, examination secretary P M Patel said, 8220;Since the Board has decided to do away with the October examinations, the pass percentage will go up even further after July, when students who have failed to clear one subject will take the test again.8221;

Describing the advantages of the October examination abolition, Patel said not only did it save on expenditure, but also improved the educational standards of the State.

Principal of the University Experimental School, which performed exceptionally well in the examinations, spoke for many mentors whose proteges have come good when he said, quot;I no longer look forward to the World Cup, or whether India wins or loses. My students have done me proudquot;.
