
Polls over, incumbent CM Digvijay Singh and 8216;CM-in-waiting8217; Uma Bharati took a day off. It was left to state8217;s Chief Electoral Officer D.S. Mathur to sum up yesterday8217;s proceedings. He said the state8217;s average balloting reached 65.07, even as repolling was to take place at 73 polling stations tomorrow, hinting at a record turnout.
As per statistics, this is the highest turnout since the state came into being in 1956. The 1977 8216;Janata Wave8217; witnessed 53.16 per cent voting while the percentages in the 1993 and 1998 hustings were above 60 in the undivided state.
The balloting ratios, however, remained more or less equal in the urban and rural areas while Naxal-infested Balaghat district recorded the highest turnout of 77.90 per cent among 45 districts.
8216;8216;Barring St. Francis in Bhopal and Burut in Bagli, where the close buttons on EVMs were pressed accidentally by presiding officers, repolling at the other 71 places is going to be held as machines were either damaged or miscreants made away with them,8217;8217; Mathur said, adding that permission of the EC has been sought to hold repoll in 63 polling stations in view of violence and booth-capturing and regularisation of adjourned balloting in 10 others where it had to be stopped midway.
He said the Commission8217;s reply is awaited, adding the voters who have exercised their franchise in the 10 centres, will not be required to vote again.
Of the booths where repolling has been recommended, 20 are in dacoit-infested Bhind district, 13 in Tikamgarh, 16 in Shivpuri, four each in Morena and Sagar and three in Dhar district, Mathur said. He added the EVMs and the polling staff had safely reached the respective district headquarters where counting is scheduled to be held on December 4.
