
Various organisations observed the World Disability Day on Wednesday.
Darpan, a school for autistic and special children, observed the day with enthusiasm. The children enjoyed a puppet show. The teachers of Darpan narrated a story through puppets to them as Poonam Kalra lent her voice to these puppets. Harwinder Kaur and Nirav Jain were the chief guests on this occasion.
Sport competitions for the disabled children were organised under Sarv Shiksha Abhiyan at the athletics ground of Punjab Agriculture University. Anil Matharoo, district coordinator of Inclusive Education for Disabled, said, 8216;About 242 children from different government and private schools participated in these competitions. Ten children who never went to school were also encouraged to participate.8221;
There were four categories of the children i.e. ortho impaired lower limb and upper limb, mentally retarded and hearing impaired and visually impaired. They participated in 58 events and were also given gold, silver and bronze medals.
About 10 students were also given consolation awards. To boost their morale, each participant was given a lunch box as a gift. Anil said, 8220;We gave bus fare to each participant and one of his guardians or attendants for attending this event.8221;
