Dehra Dun, March 25

A win will put ruling BJP at the half-way mark in the 70-member Uttarakhand House

.

Heavy polling took place in the Bazpur Assembly segment of Udham Singh Nagar district that went to polls today. More than 70 per cent polling had taken place by 4 p.m. and poll officials said the percentage could go higher by the time polling ends. Long queues of men and women were seen outside polling booths. No untoward incident was reported from anywhere in the Assembly segment.

The Bazpur segment is important for the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party BJP that fell one seat short of majority in the recently concluded Assembly elections in the state.

The BJP won 34 seats out of total 69 where polling had taken place. Elections in the Bazpur Assembly segment were postponed following the death of Congress candidate Janakraj Sharma in a road accident just before the elections. The ruling party as well as the Congress have left no stone unturned to win the seat. While the former wants to retain the seat for stability of its government, the latter wants to wrest the seat to deny the ruling party the luxury of having its own majority in the House.

Three-member Uttarakhand Kranti Dal UKD, a regional political outfit, and three Independent legislators support the BJP government. Arvind Pandey of the BJP, the sitting legislator, is facing Kailash Rani Sharma, wife of the late Janakraj Sharma as the Congress candidate.

Chief Minister Maj. Gen. B C Khanduri retd, senior party leaders Sushma Swaraj and Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi from the BJP and former chief minister N D Tiwari and state Congress chief Harish Rawat campaigned vigorously for their respective candidates.
