8226; I have read with interest the article 8216;Executive Dunnit8217; by T.V.R. Shenoy IE, March 24. The writer has given an excellent analysis of how the judiciary had intervened in the Jharkhand legislative matters. Nobody could have disagree with him on his observations. He has aptly observed, 8220;It is poor work on anatomy that ignores flesh and blood to talk only of the skeleton8221;. The hue and cry raised by the Speaker of the Lok Sabha and his conducting of a conference of presiding officers on this issue appears to me as a struggle between the politically hungry legislature and an intellectual Supreme Court, which is interested in safeguarding the Constitution.

8226; Apropos the article, 8216;Executive dunnit8217; IE, March 24, the judiciary should be the ultimate authority when it comes to interpreting the Constitution. With the type of elected representatives we have 8212; there is absolutely no basic minimum qualifications other than age 8212; what interpretation of the Constitution can we expect from them? Also the power of the executive, including that of the Speaker, should be limited to the House and not outside it.

Khaki terror

8226; Apropos of the article, 8216;A matter of degree, third degree8217; IE, March 24, the police are accountable to the people but they continue to lack accountability. The brutal torture that sometimes comes to light is the result of the fact that these 8220;criminals in uniform8221; wield absolute power, which corrupts absolutely.

More light, please

8226; This is with reference to a recent article I read, entitled 8216;NASA sees light of two planets beyond our solar system8217;. It reported that a NASA telescope, peering far beyond our solar system has for the first time directly measured light from two Jupiter-sized gas planets closely orbiting distant stars, adding crucial features to astronomy8217;s portrait of faraway worlds. Studies of the infrared light from the two giant planets suggest they are made of hot, swirling gases that reach boiling point at 1,340 degrees Fahrenheit, or higher. Since the mid-nineties, scientists have discovered more than 130 of these so-called extrasolar planets. But the stars they orbit are so distant and shine so brightly that they tend to obscure the planets. Despite the significance of all this, I have not read about them in any of the newspapers here surprisingly. I am, incidentally, a third year engineering student.

Shocked or Bucknored?

8226; Bidyut K. Chatterjee is quite wrong 8216;Biased coverage8217;, Letters, March 23. Sachin was caught by the wicket keeper to the bowling of Kaneria in Mohali and could not have seen the catch. But the one that Bucknored him would certainly have been discerned, as there was a noticeable space between the ball and the bat and the bounce of the ball was such that it would have produced an audible noise had it been in contact with the bat.
