CHANDIGARH, April 30: The appointment to the Community Oriented Policing Service COPS will be reviewed every six months. This was announced by Inspector-general of Police Kiran Bedi at the meeting of police officials and the COPS members.She said this was being done to ensure that only the active members are retained. quot;COPS is only for those who can spare time for pro-active policing,quot; she said. quot;Every six months your performance will be evaluated and those who are active will be kept, others will be replaced.quot;
This, she said, will be based on reports of the sub-divisional police officers SDPOs and station house officers SHOs of the respective police station. She also announced the merger of COPS and Helping the Aged police Service HAPS.
Everytime a board will be set up to interview and select the COPS. While the SDPOs will meet them every three months, the SHOs will see the COPS once a month. Bedi said more people will be enrolled into COPS, especially from villages and colonies as these are the areas vulnerable to crime. The meeting was called to discuss the roles and the duties of the COPS. This was the first ever meeting of the COPS with police officials ever since its inception in June 1996. For the past over one year, it had been virtually dormant, as was pointed out by members today.
Calling for active support from COPS, she said that it will keep function as quot;eyes and earsquot; of the police, keeping a watch over the crime and unlawful activities taking place in the area. Bedi said training will be imparted to the COPS, after whom they will be given challan chits on which they can take down the registration number of the vehicles violating traffic rules. She said COPS would be involved in the house-to-house verification done by the beat officers. The COPS should try and suggest solutins of the problems in the area, besides identifying them, she said.
