8226;One can understand the unease among our politicians on the comments made by the chief election commissioner, J.M. Lyngdoh 8216;Lyngdoh flies off the handle to soar high8217;, IE, December 26. However, what is important here is that the very politicians who waste no opportunity to berate each other have found common ground against the plain speak of the CEC to defend themselves.

Many Indians would be in complete agreement with the statement of the CEC. They might perhaps differ regarding the 8216;mild8217; manner in which the CEC chose to describe the politicians.

The unfortunate reality is that politicians are a necessary evil to govern this country, and the CEC, like any other Indian, can only be a mute witness to their acts of commission and omission.

8226; Chief Election Commissioner J.M. Lyngdoh8217;s comments have only proved that hell hath no fury as a bureaucrat scorned.

Can he, with his hand on his heart, say that bureaucrats are any better than politicians? At least politicians can be voted out. Ensconced as he is in a safe and cushy chair after retirement, he can afford to rail at all those whom he 8216;8216;sirred8217;8217; in his earlier avatar.

8226; Nationalism runs strong in every Indian8217;s blood 8216;No ceasefire on this LoC, Army rolls out the artillery8217;, IE, December 27. But with growing commercialism, depleting national ethos, rapid westernisation, it is time for some high voltage nationalism.

Kudos to J.P. Dutta for making Border and LoC even if these films are propelled by the profit motive. The army could benefit by using this as an opportunity to attract talented youngsters to the armed forces.

8226; Relations between India and Pakistan are moving towards normalisation. It is hoped that in the process bilateral trade will get a boost and, more importantly, defence budgets will be cut, permitting greater spending on development projects.

Sadly, movies like LoC and Border only help in increasing tension between India and Pakistan, and nothing else.

Bapu8217;s burden

8226; This refers to your editorial 8216;Gandhi8217;s quotemartial8217; December 25. It is hard to countenance our current lot of politicians repeatedly going after Mahatma Gandhi. His writings are constantly being misinterpreted.
What are our political leaders trying to prove?
