CALCUTTA, FEBRUARY 18 : Despite struggling with the course, Gaurav Ghei shot a one-over 73 to keep the lead after three days at the Rs 20-lakh Wills Masters, at the Royal Calcutta Golf Club course.
Behind him, one stroke away is Vijay Kumar, who is always dangerous on a last day. Ghei is at one-under 215 for three days, while Vijay is level par 216.
Making nine consecutive pars, the India Cements-sponsored Ghei was level par for the front nine. On the par-four 11th, he hit his tee shot into the right rough adjacent to the 12th fairway. Chipping out, Ghei approached the green with his third but failed to make the putt for par, resulting in a bogey. Another dropped shot on the 14th took him to two over for the day but his only birdie of the day on the 18th left him with a one shot lead for the tournament.
On the par four eighth, Vijay hit his second shot into the bunker and played a shot that rolled over thirty feet and lipped the cup. However, he too could only manage a 72 on Friday. After starting strongly with birdies on the first and second, he failed to follow them up dropping a shot on the fifth to turn at one under par. Another birdie on the par five 15th was undone by bogeys on the 16th and 18th.
