NEW DELHI, JULY 13: Congress has asked Haryana Chief Minister Bansi Lal to resign and recommend dissolution of the assembly to facilitate holding of assembly elections along with the Lok Sabha polls, highly placed party sources said tonight.

Bansi Lal, whose Haryana Vikas Party (HVP) government survived a trial of strength in the state assembly last fortnight due to Congress support, has sought time from the party high command to consider the proposal, the sources said.

AICC general secretary Pranab Mukherjee earlier told reporters that Congress was awaiting Bansi Lal’s response to its proposals about future political action in the state and would take a decision on the issue “anytime”.

His comments had come in the wake of reports that the high command was about to withdraw support to the HVP government, thereby paving the way for Assembly polls along with Lok Sabha elections.

“We cannot keep the party bonded to one decision in the interest of the organisation and the state”, Mukherjee said in reply to a question emphasising that the party’s `limited role’ during the trial of strength was to keep BJP-INLD combine out of power in the state.

Mukherjee, who is in charge of party affairs in Haryana, dismissed suggestions that the Congress was taken for a ride in the state.

Bansi Lal had met Congress president Sonia Gandhi on July five, a few days after his government was bailed out and had said he would abide by whatever decision Gandhi would take about future political action in the state.
