Adventurous strokes
She captures images in motion. From painting sailboats to a spiritual journey Thairna has evolved both, as a woman and as a painter. As a 20 yr. old she joined her father8217;s crew on a 40 ft. sailboat. Adventure honed her creative instincts and she painted. Five years ago she came to Pune and began her work here.
Thairna a Brazilian, is a graduate of the Brazil School of Art. From acrylics to oils she has explored freedom and fulfiled her longing to journey. 8220;It8217;s like a wave that sweeps over me and I get down to paint. I work through the night and in about two to three days I complete my expression. She stays in a little bamboo hut on the terrace of a sprawling bungalow in Koregaon park. 8220;It gives me the feeling of being in my boat and draws me closer to nature.8221;
She has turned her living room into an art gallery christened Chiron, after the planet dedicated to the healing arts and creativity. The gallery hopes to provide expression to painters, photographers, sculptors and the like. Based on international standards the gallery plans to launch artists and have poetry readings to help create a positive energy. Right now an exhibition of Thairna8217;s own work is on display at Chiron and will go on till August 17.
Against all odds
Most of us are familiar with Neil Simon8217;s brilliant play The Odd Couple8217; that he wrote in the 1970s centring around two men, whose wives had left them, and who were putting up together. Well, keeping with the times and the feminist movement the playwright has now rewritten the piece to make two women, who are separated from their husbands take centre-stage. The result, apparently, is a play that surpasses the original in terms of hilarity and emotion. What8217;s better is that the play, directed by Alyque Padamsee, is being premiered in Pune on August 13 and 14 at the Nehru Memorial Hall.
8220;Pune pre-empted Mumbai this time because we got an offer first from a Pune sponsor, Nihaan Estates. So we do three shows in Pune first and then 20 in Mumbai, 8221; informs Alyque who is presently in Pune overseeing the arrangements for the premier. 8220;The reason I am doing this play is also because it8217;s been a long time since I did some comedy and in these depressing times we really need something to lighten the atmosphere.
The punch lines are aplenty 8211; there8217;s a laugh-a-minute. Most importantly, it also drives home the point that there is life after divorce for women. You see a drastic transformation in the women from the beginning of the two hour drama to when the curtain finally falls.8221; With the lead roles being played by Sharon Prabhakar and Karla Singh The Odd Couple8217; promises to be just what you need to pep up your evenings after a hard day8217;s work.
Book it
What8217;s nirvana? Rains, tea and hot piping snacks as you curl up near a window pane or snuggle into a quilt. But wait something8217;s missing to complete the experience. A good book. And fulfilling that need is the World Book Bazaar on at the Institute of Engineers till the 16th of this month.
With thousands of books covering almost every topic under the sun, from beauty to fashion to computers and encyclopaedias for kids, the place is a veritable treasure house for book lovers. 8220;We have almost 3,000 to 4,000 people visiting the exhibition everyday,8221; claims Sameer Lakhani, the proprietor. With discounts and bargain sales on, the bazaar hopes to make reading more popular in this age of electronic media. A welcome intention, all write.
