Sunil Grover always wants to be somebody else, as he isn’t comfortable being himself: ‘I’m not happy with myself’

Sunil Grover says he derives immense satisfaction from becoming somebody else and describes it as a form of meditation.

Sunil GroverSunil Grover recently pulled off remarkably accurate, top-tier impressions of Aamir Khan and Gulzar.

Finally, the time has come when Sunil Grover, after years of hard work and toil, has truly become the talk of the town. While many may still think of him as a comedian first, the truth is that he is an actor of the highest calibre, one with immense range and a rare ability to completely embody any character handed to him. At present, he is dominating social media following the latest episode of The Great Indian Kapil Show, where he pulled off a remarkably authentic impression of Aamir Khan, one that earned praise from the superstar himself. But long-time fans know that this brilliance has always been within him. An actor first and foremost, Sunil brings much-needed gravitas and emotional truth even to mimicry performances, elevating them beyond mere imitation.

In an old interview with Film Companion Studios, Sunil Grover opened up about his deep love for becoming somebody else, describing the process as a form of meditation. He said, “I love people. I’m not just happy with myself. I want to become somebody else most of the time; that makes me very comfortable. Right now, I am myself in front of so many cameras, and I’m not as comfortable as I would be if I were somebody else.”

Elaborating further, he added, “Because I don’t know who I am. I don’t know even now. I just know I enjoy being someone else. I enjoy experiencing emotions through someone else. It’s very entertaining. And sorry if I’m sounding a bit heavy, but when I pull off a character authentically, it gives a sense of meditation. It gives a feeling of exercise, and you forget yourself. When you become somebody else, for that moment you completely forget who you are and live another life. That gives genuine satisfaction.”

It is rather unfortunate that many have still not fully appreciated the fine, nuanced performances Sunil Grover has delivered in films like Pataakha, as well as in web series such as Tandav.
