The interim report submitted by the CID on Wednesday has ruled out the possibility of graphic designer Rizwanur Rehman committing suicide, a theory propagated by Kolkata Police Commissioner Prasun Mukherjee. On September 23, two days after the body of Rizwanur was found near the railway tracks at Patipukur in north Kolkata, Mukherjee had tried to pass it off as suicide.

Home Secretary Prasad Ranjan Ray said the CID report did not mention that the death was a suicide. Highly placed sources in the Home Department said though the CID report is an interim version, the report was significant. 8220;We are waiting for the forensic report which will reveal whether the death was an accident, suicide or a murder,8221; the sources said.

The Home Secretary8217;s statement has once again raised questions about the interference of senior police officials in a private family matter. Ray said the tainted officials, including Gyanwant Singh and Ajay Kumar, will be called for interrogation. 8220;Of course, the officials will be called. They will be called at an appropriate time,8221; the Home Secretary said. Ray said the interim report deals only with unnatural death and there will be further reports by the CID. He said the judicial inquiry will try and establish whether the death was an accident, homicide or suicide.

The CID has so far interrogated two Kolkata Police officials8212;Sub-Inspector Krishnendu Das and Assistant Commissioner Sukanti Chakraborty of the Anti-Rowdy Section.

Meanwhile, political circles in the state believe that the Government is trying to shield the tainted cops. Even on Thursday, the Government came in for harsh criticism from Left Front partners. Minor Irrigation Minister Nandagopal Bhattacharya of the CPI compared Bengal with Bihar. 8220;Are we living in Bihar? Why will innocent people not get justice,8221; he said adding that the tainted officers should be removed to ensure an impartial inquiry.
