MCM DAV win debate trophy
Deepti Sodhi and Divya of MCM DAV College won the running trophy in a debate on "Does modernisation mean westernisation", organised by Yuvsatta on the occasion of the 133rd birth anniversary of Lala Lajpat Rai here today.
Thirteen colleges of the city participated in the debate. The second prize was won by Shruti Malik and Harmeet of Punjab Engineering College while Munish Jain and Shiv Kumar of DAV College, Sector 10, were third.
Phone subscribers call on GMT
A depulation of the Ghar Bachao Committee met the General Manager Telephones (GMT), Chandigarh, and apprised him of the problems being faced by telephone subscribers in Nayagaon, Janata Colony, Shivalik Vihar and Dashmesh Nagar. The Committee spokesman said the GMT assured that the villages will be attached with the Chandigarh exchange by March.
Grant for war widows
A number of war widows were felicitated at the Air Force Station, Ambala, by the regional branch of the Air Force Wives’ WelfareAssociation. The families of airmen killed during the 1965 and 1971 Indo-Pak wars were given a grant of Rs 5,001 each.
Parmi wins in declamation
A declamation contest was organised by the NSS unit of GGDSD College, Sector 32, as part of the birth anniversary celebrations of Swami Vivekanand. The first prize was won by Parmil Bector, Gagandeep Singh was second and Anil Chandail third. Charanjeet Singh got the consolation prize. C.L. Narang, coordinator, NSS, Panjab University, presided over the function.
B.Sc English (viva) re-examination
Re-examination has been ordered in the English (viva) for B.Sc Honours School students of Panjab University. The exam will be conducted in the second week of February. Earlier, students had asked for a re-examination on the plea that many of them could not appear as they were not provided prior information about the date of the exam. Activists of the Students Organisation of Panjab University (SOPU) had submitted that the time period for preparationof the examination was also less. The university conceded to their demand yesterday.
Seminar at Govt College, Sec 46
A seminar on "Public enterprises: Reforms in India" was organised by the Department of Public Administration, Government College, Sector 46, in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Public Administration. Presiding over the seminar, former Haryana chief secretary B.S. Ojha said the low rate of returns on investment and declining contribution to national savings was the main criticism against the public sector. Chairman of the PU department of public administration said that empirical evidence indicated that reform measures had achieved only a limited success.
New scooter launched
LML Limited launched its new 125 cc engine scooter, "Sensation", here today. Termed "the pleasure machine", the scooter, claimed company general managers Hemant Malhotra, P.K. Sarkar and Arvind Mayar, delivered 60 km to a litre under normal city driving conditions. The scooter is available inboth kick-start and self-start versions, priced at nearly Rs 23,000 and Rs 25,000, respectively. The scooter is available in these colours: Nilgiri Blue, Casablanca White, Red Milano and Marble Green. The company also plans to launch at least five more models in the two-wheeler segment during the current year.
