The clip begins with Prashant being introduced as a “simple soldier.” In the video, Prashant says, “I am 24 years old. After my father’s death, I got the job as a constable.” He also shared that he was working as a singer in the Kolkata Police orchestra at the time. Prashant is seen marching in during the Indian Idol auditions, and he admitted to the judges that he had never been formally trained in singing. However, when he began to sing, the judges — Anu Malik, Javed Akhtar, Kumar Sanu and Alisha Chinai — were visibly amazed by his singing.

Prashant was selected during the first audition, and the judges told him to come to Mumbai for the next round. The clip further shows Prashant breaking down emotionally after his audition. Recalling the moment, he said, “It was an emotional moment, I was crying. I had just heard about Mumbai and it is a dream to go there of so many people.”

Indian Idol contestant refused to sing duet with Prashant

However, Prashant faced a major hurdle in the next round when he was partnered with Richa for a duet performance, but she refused to be paired with him. In the clip, Prashant can be seen saying, “Richa refused to sing with me. She thought I can”t sing with her. I felt bad in that moment.” Prashant appeared visibly angry and hurt by Richa’s behaviour. Later, judges Javed Akhtar and Alisha Chinai can be seen convincing Richa to sing with Prashant.

But this wasn’t the end of their problems. In a behind-the-scenes clip, it was revealed that as Richa’s room was occupied by another contestant for a practice session, Prashant offered that they practise in his room instead. However, Richa refused and said, “I don’t like to go someone else’s room. I want to practice in my room.” Eventually, the two arrived at a solution and performed together on stage, which led to them being selected for the next round. Prashant was among the four contestants selected for the next stage, making it into the top 28.

Prashant died on Sunday due to a suspected cardiac arrest in Delhi at the age of 43. His wife, Geeta Thapa, ruled out any foul play in his death and told ANI, “It was a natural death. He was in his sleep when he left us. I was right beside him at that time,” she said.
