Five unidentified persons attacked a watchman of a Christian school in Banduha village of Ujjain on Tuesday when he did not disclose to them the location of five nuns who live nearby.

The assailants had with them an air-gun and shot 35-year-old Amar Singh twice in the foot.

The five nuns teach in a village school and live nearby. However, Singh told the attackers that the nuns were not around, ASI A K Mishra of Ghatia police station told The Indian Express.

All five attackers were wearing masks and when Singh 8212; who had converted to Christianity some time back 8212; refused to call the sisters, they shot at him. Singh was taken to Ujjain civil hospital for treatment and was declared out of danger.

The police reportedly found a slipper left behind by the assailants. However, a sniffer dog led the police only till a nearby road.

Mishra said that the police were trying to find out if any villager had been injured as Singh told the police that one of the assailants had got stuck in a fence.

No organisation has claimed responsibility for the attack so far. Spokesperson of the Catholic Conference of Bishops, Madhya Pradesh, Fr Anand Muttungal said some unidentified men had inquired about the sisters four days ago.

Two guards have now been posted at the school.
