8226; The spontaneous outburst of tumultuous euphoria from lakhs of admirers that greeted Abhinav Bindra is an eloquent tribute to the glory that he brought the nation by winning a gold medal for India at the Olympics. It clearly shows that sportspersons serve as ambassadors for peace, solidarity and integration. Abhinav has proved that youthful brilliance, dash, vigour and spirit still reign supreme at the Olympic Games. He has now emerged as perhaps the most talented, tenacious and successful performer in the history of India at the Olympics.

Our I-Day gift
8226; This Independence Day will not be like the previous one. The whole of India is delighted and proud of Abhinav8217;s 8216;golden performance8217; in these Olympic games. I hope it will not only inspire thousands for various events in the future but also those still competing in Beijing. Now, the people of India and the media should treat other sports as equal to cricket. Kudos to Abhinav Bindra and I hope we shall get a few more medals in these Olympics.

Formula for shrine
8226; There has been much acrimony and violence over the issue of allotment and subsequent cancellation of the land to the Amarnath Shrine Board. The issue needs to be resolved amicably. Some formulas to resolve the matter are in circulation 8212; one relates to the status quo ante as per J038;K High Court order. This can be a good starting point for putting behind all that happened subsequently and making a fresh start in the matter. I hope that good sense prevails on both sides and violence stops. In that lies the well-being of the nation.

From Amarnath
8226; This refers to your editorial, 8216;J038;K038;L8217;. It is criminal complacency and an inexcusable shortsightedness of our political leadership that they have allowed the issue of J038;K to simmer indefinitely. Their one-point programme has been 8216;appeasement8217; of whoever can win them electoral contests. No wonder therefore that terrorism could flourish here with or without the external support while the masses of the region remain miserably poor and illiterate. Of course these regions have their distinct problems but when has our leadership attempted to rise above its vote-bank gimmicks and seriously tried to find solutions?

Monsoon pulpit
8226; Amartya Sen8217;s address to parliamentarians included a much needed reminder of the acute deprivation in the country. He rightly argued that immediate and vocal discontent consumes most of the political energy with the result that fundamental problems remain unaddressed. Poor delivery of public services still remains the biggest incapacity of the governments so far. It is anybody8217;s guess that education, health, nutrition and justice delivery are the key areas which need immediate attention.
