The Greater Noida Police on Tuesday arrested the director of MZ Wiztown, Abhay Kumar, in connection with the death of Noida-based techie Yuvraj Mehta who drowned in a 70-foot-deep pit, after screaming for help for around two hours, on Saturday.
In a statement, the Gautam Buddh Nagar Police said Kumar was arrested on charges including culpable homicide, causing death by negligence and negligent act endangering human life.
The Knowledge Park Police, with the help of manual intelligence and confidential information, arrested Kumar from Noida’s Sector 150.
“… a case was registered at Knowledge Park police station regarding the death of car driver, Yuvraj (27)… who drowned in water accumulated on a plot, due to negligence by the builder, at a building under construction… The arrested accused was wanted in this case,” an officer said.
Around 12.30 am on Saturday, Yuvraj was driving to his Noida home from his office in Gurgaon through dense fog. Suddenly, his Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara went off the road, over a low, partially broken boundary wall and plunged into the pit filled with water.

“The visibility was extremely low due to fog, and the boundary wall near the drain was already broken,” his father, Raj Mehta, alleged in his police complaint.
According to the victim’s family, Yuvraj had managed to climb out of the partially submerged car and stood atop its roof, screaming for help for nearly two hours. Although his voice could be heard, he was apparently not visible in the fog.
According to sources in the Noida Police, police and fire services personnel made efforts to rescue him, even as they waited for equipment and specialists to arrive. Officials said Mehta drowned at around 2.30 am.
The post-mortem examination on Monday revealed that Mehta died due to asphyxia followed by cardiac arrest, sources said.
Mehta, who lost his mother two years ago, lived with his father at Tata Eureka Park in Noida’s Sector 150 — about 900 metres from where he drowned. He was the sole earning member of his family.
The Greater Noida Police on Sunday had registered an FIR against real estate companies MZ Wiztown Planners Private Limited and Lotus Greens Construction Private Limited.
A spokesperson for Lotus Greens had issued a statement saying it had “no role to play because the said plot was transferred in 2019-20 to… [another company] with the approval of the Noida Authority”.
Abhay Kumar, Director, Wiztown, had said the land was sold to them by Lotus Greens and was already excavated in 2020. “However, the Noida Authority withheld commencement permission, effectively paralysing the project,” he had alleged.
