Katy Perry8217;s new album, One of the Boys, is a pure pop concoction that8217;s low on content
It8217;s hard to believe that Katy Perry8217;s debut was a Christian gospel album. The in-your-face One of the Boys belongs more to the angsty class of pop tunes which was immortalised by Madonna8217;s Papa Don8217;t Preach. In fact, it comes as no surprise that Perry8217;s tongue-in-cheek humour and digs at ex-boyfriends have found a very vocal fan in Madge herself.
But aside from the rebelliousness, what is there to the album? It8217;s definitely peppy and catchy and more likely than not, once you8217;ve listened to the album, you will find yourself humming along to the tracks One of the Boys, Ur So Gay and I Kissed a Girl. And unless you8217;ve been living under a rock this past couple of months, you8217;ll know that I Kissed a Girl has been in the news for a lot of reasons. The most obvious one is the bi-curious vibe of the song. Besides, the singer8217;s parents are both pastors who8217;ve vociferously expressed their disapproval of this particular track. But that hasn8217;t stopped Perry from crooning, 8220;I kissed a girl and I liked it/ The taste of a cherry chapstick8221;.
The 23-year-old singer has definitely got the voice and the looks to make it to the big league of pop princesses. She can hit the falsetto notes without straining her vocal chords and has an excellent command over timing. In fact, on a less 8216;debutante princess8217; album, she could8217;ve easily shown off her vocal range. As it turns out, the songs themselves overshadow her talent. This brings us to the one major flaw with this album. The song-writing skills in evidence here could do with some polish. It may seem cute and bratty to tell an ex, 8220;I hope you hang yourself with your H038;M scarf/ While jerking off, listening to Mozart,8221; Ur So Gay but as a soundtrack, it ends up sounding juvenile. None of the song lyrics are anything to write home about, since they8217;re at times trite and predictable, and at other times, they8217;re shrill and attention-seeking.
Perry is being touted as the next Madonna, with lady M herself doing a lot of unsolicited promotion for her in interviews. But while Madonna8217;s music was truly groundbreaking in an age where female sexuality was still just coming out of the closet, Perry is making her music in less repressive times, where sensation sells and anyone who can sing about kissing girls can be a one-hit-wonder. She needs to guard against being relegated to the badlands of Pop by writing about something that is more than just 8216;Dear Diary8217; material. As already said, she does have the talent to make it really big. With a voice like hers, she8217;s a shoe-in for a Grammy or two, but only if she manages to come up with a genuine anthem like her idol8217;s Express Yourself.
One of the Boys Rs 350.
