
Economic zones near the International Borders and Line of Control will lead to economic security, President APJ Abdul Kalam has said. 8220;Border trade is a must,8221; he said at the 19th IB Centenary Endowment Lecture here.
8220;Accelerated development has to be integrated with peace missions,8221; Kalam said, identifying economic zones as a key component along with social development in difficult areas.
On security, better coordination between intelligence and security agencies and reduction of turnaround time in collection and dissemination of information formed the underlying theme as Kalam spoke about the dynamics of intelligence missions.
Speaking to a gathering of Intelligence Bureau officials in the presence of Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil and National Security Advisor MK Narayanan, Kalam pointed out that India8217;s efforts to grow as an economic superpower were often hindered by violence.
8220;In this new world, the dividing line between protection of the nation against external threats and internal threats has become very thin. This calls for an extraordinary level of co-ordination between the armed forces, intelligence agencies and the local police,8221; the President said.
Kalam said redefining the role of the Intelligence Bureau in view of the technological, social and cultural challenges would make it effective in preventing subversion.
Naxal violence in many states found a mention with Kalam identifying it as one of the challenges the country faced. 8220;There is a need for district administrations to exercise greater influence in certain forest areas,8221; he said.
Unveiling his concept of a National Campaign to Eradicate Terrorism, the President called for synergising multiple agencies for forecasting and dealing with insurgency.
