Protesting the arrest of a senior leader, various labour unions held demonstrations and burnt effigies of the Punjab government and police administration across the state on Thursday.
Mukesh Malaud, president of Zameen Prapti Sangharsh Committee (ZPSC),was arrested on December 30 by Sangrur police from Delhi while he was returning from Maharashtra after attending a program organised by Ambedkar Mission.
Pendu Mazdoor Union (PMU) Punjab and ZPSC held protests in more than two dozen towns and villages, including Jalandhar, Kapurthala, Gurdaspur, Ludhiana, Moga, Sangrur, Patiala and Nawanshahr.
Members of PMU and ZPSC warned that if the labour leader is not released and the cases registered against journalists and the IT activist are not withdrawn, an intense agitation will be launched against the Punjab government.
Kashmir Singh Ghughshor, state secretary of PMU, and ZPSC leaders Bikram Singh Hathoa and Dharamvir Harigarh alleged that the Bhagwant Mann-led government, “rattled by the ongoing struggles of landless labourers for their rightful share in panchayat land and for making efforts in establishing Begumpura settlements on land in Bir Eswan village of Sangrur”, is attempting to suppress the movement.
“By sending Malaud to jail, the state government was conspiring to leave Dalits leaderless and was siding with big landowners and feudal forces to weaken the land rights movement,” Ghugshor alleged.
The union leaders also claimed that intelligence agencies have been tracking leaders through mobile phone location surveillance.
