Govt okays SBL, UBI merger
MUMBAI:
The Union government has sanctioned the scheme of amalgamation of Sikkim Bank Ltd SBL with Union Bank of India UBI from today. All the branches of SBL shall function as branches of UBI, a statement from Reserve Bank of India said here.

SBL, which has been under the order of moratorium from the close of business on September 4 last, has a deposit base of about Rs 64 crore, most of it in term deposits while the non-performing assets NPAs were more than Rs 60 crore. According to the scheme of merger, UBI would be taking over only the assets of SBL and not its liabilities and the depositors would continue to be customers of the bank under UBI.

Microsoft launches Windows 2000 Hindi
NEW DELHI:
Microsoft Corp8217;s Windows 2000 software platform, due to be launched in February, will be able to carry programming applications in Hindi and eventually in other Indian languages, company officials said. They told a news conference late on Tuesday that the operating systems software, representing the next version of the company8217;s NT series of network computing platforms, would be quot;completely Hindi and Tamil enabled.quot;

Though the platform will not immediately match all the features offered in the Japanese and Chinese versions of Windows, the software will offer APIs, or application programming interfaces, which serve as hooks or road mapsfor developers making end-use software. So far, Hindi fonts have been superimposed on the English script operating systems but Windows 2000 will have the language script, called Devanagari, as part of the basic operating system.
