Renowned soccer coach Subhas Bhowmick shamed his club, East Bengal today, like nothing or nobody ever has. The former national footballer was caught red-handed by CBI officials, taking a bribe Rs 1.5 lakh from a Kolkata businessman. And when the officials tried to apprehend him, Bhowmick hit an official in the face and tried to flee.

He did not succeed, as the investigators8217; arrested him.

The officer, bleeding profusely from his upper lips, tackled Bhowmick from behind and the coach fell flat in the middle of the road, 100 m from Nizam Palace 8212; Kolkata8217;s CBI headquarters. Before he could run again, the officers overpowered him and marched him to Nizam Palace, all along the length of a busy central city thoroughfare.

Bhowmik is also superintendent, Central Excise, Anti-Evasion Commissionerate 5, Kolkata. He is reported to have asked for a bribe of Rs 4 lakh from a businessman, Vishal Nair, after conducting raids on the latter8217;s company premises near South Club. The deal was reportedly settled at Rs 1.5 lakh, and Nair agreed to hand over the money today.

This morning, Nair went to the CBI office and lodged a complaint against the coach. 8216;8216;As per the complaint, Bhowmick threatened Nair with dire consequences if he did not pay him the money. This had been going on for some time. After receiving the complaint, we laid a trap and caught Bhowmick red-handed. He will also be booked for assaulting a senior officer of the CBI,8217;8217; said D K Thakur, SP, Anti-Corruption Branch of the CBI.

Around 4 pm, officers were waiting for the coach to keep his rendezvous with the businessman, on the opposite side of South Club. Bhowmick drove by in his car at around 4.15 pm, and stopped near the gate of South Club. After shaking hands Nair took out three bundles of Rs 500 currency notes and handed them over to Bhowmick. It was then that Bhowmick saw a man approaching. The coach started running. The officer, S. R. Majumdar, additional SP, CBI, gave chase. He managed to grab the coach from behind, but Bhowmick punched him on the mouth, reportedly threatening, 8216;8216;I will kill you8217;8217;.
