NEW DELHI, June 26: Bengal grabbed the last quarter-final berth of the 29th Junior National hockey championship from Pool F, holding the more fancied Tamil Nadu 1-1. The draw meant Bengal managed to stay ahead on goal difference than their rivals and that carried them forward into the last eight.

Railways, leaders in Pool E, completed the formalities beating a hapless Jammu and Kashmir 6-0. In an inconsequential match in the same pool, a fighting Bombay went down by a solitary goal to Karnataka, the latter winning 4-3. Punjab and Sind Bank topped Pool G beating Gujarat 6-0.

From Pool H Air-India had already made it to the last eight stage as Orissa needing to score 26 goals against Andhra Pradesh to grab the quarter-final berth ahead of Air-India, managed only 16. Andhra scored two in reply.

In the other matches, Madhya Pradesh defeated Mizoram 10-2 while Uttar Pradesh beat Bihar 7-0.

PSB had an easy day against Gujarat. Sukhwinder Singh narrowly missed a hat-trick yet took his personal tally to three goals. Sandeep Singh, Preetinder Singh and Parminder Singh scored a goal each to consolidate the lead further.

Five institutional teams have made it to the last eight stage and are all strong contenders. Delhi will clash with Bhopal in the first quarter-finals tomorrow. In another quarter-final match BSF will take on SAIL. The remaining two quarters will be played the following day.
