Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed today ordered a magisterial probe into the killing of five youths in Bandipora who were allegedly pushed ahead by the Army in operations against militants.
Sayeed made this announcement in the state Assembly this evening while replying to the debate on the motion of thanks to the Governor8217;s address to the joint session of the legislature.
The killing of the youths on February 6 had triggered widespread protests by civilians in the area. Even a section of the Hurriyat had stepped in, threatening to call off talks with Delhi if urgent remedial measures were not taken.
Sayeed today told the Assembly that he too wanted to know the truth and was, therefore, in favour of a magisterial inquiry.
He said he had taken up the incident with Army chief Gen N.C. Vij who assured him of action after the probe.
He said the Army chief had issued instructions not to use civilians as porters in anti-militancy operations henceforth.
Such incidents had taken place earlier too but in the Army8217;s case, it does not make public the action taken against their personnel, he said. He called for greater transparency in such matters.
