NEW DELHI, Aug 17: Calcutta’s India Automobiles, comprising Sukhranjan Ghosh, Debashis Roy, Snehashish Roy, Pritish Kushari and Ashim Mukherjee, lifted the Modipon Gold Cup beating Delhi’s Dhampur Sugar Mills by 7.5 international match points (IMP) in a keenly-contested final here last night.Indian Automobiles, who were down by 2.5 IMP midway through the final, picked up two IMP in the third session to reduce the margin to 0.5. In the next session, the Calcutta team beat Dhampur 48-40 to end the match 140-132.5 and take home Rs 150,000.

Dhampur, comprising Ashok Goel, Ashok Ruia, Kamal Mukherjee, VM Lal and Jitu Solani had to be content with the Rs 75,000 second prize in the five-day bridge tournament which concluded on Sunday.

In the pairs final, Delhi’s Subhash Gupta and Chennai’s Venkataraman came first with 854.9 to win the Rs 20,000 prize. Delhi’s Rajeshwar Tewari and B Satyanarayan were a close second with 836.5.

The other pairs who won the prize money were: Calcutta’s Asit Kundu and CS Majumdar (830), Mumbai’s Anil Pandhye and Anand Mehta (808.8), Mumbai’s Raju Tolani and Vijay Phathapekar (795.2) and Calcutta’s Sudhir Ganguly and Aloke Sadhu (778.3).

India Automobiles took home Rs 1,50,000, while Dhampur Sugar Mills received Rs 75,000.

The two losing semi-finalists, Wellknit (Chennai) and Khandelwal (Nagpur) received Rs 30,000 while the four losing quater-finalists BuildIndia, Formidable, RV Rao and Dr Tolani received Rs 10,000 each. The winning pair of Venkataraman and Gupta took home Rs 20,000. The Delhi pair of Rajeshwar Tewari and B Satyanarayana stood second (836.5 points) to win Rs 12,000.
