TAIPEI, SEPT 25: A powerful earthquake aftershock hit Taiwan today, shaking buildings in the capital Taipei far away from the epicentre of Tuesday8217;s shockwave which killed over 2,000 people.

No figures on damage or casualties were immediately available but seismologists said the quake measured 5.6 on the Richter Scale They said the tremor was an aftershock from Tuesday8217;s quake and originated 5.7 kms underground.

Earlier in the day a separate earthquake from a different origin measuring 5.1 on the Richter Scale struck Taichung county, the worst affected area in this week8217;s devastating quake. There were no reports of casualties from that quake either, although buildings shook and damaged properties were further weakened.

Since Tuesday8217;s massive 7.6 quake, the island has been rocked by 6,570 aftershocks, more than 60 classed as major quakes in their own right, all originating from the same epicentre in the central county of Nantou.
