
SAN JOSE, February 16: Andre Agassi snapped a losing streak of nearly two years here yesterday with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over world No 1 Pete Sampras in the final of the ATP Tour Sybase Open.
Agassi captured his fourth title at this event and first ATP Tour title since winning the ATP Championships in Cincinnati on August 11, 1996. He earned 45,000 for his 35th career singles title.
Title for Krajicek
ST PETERSBURG: In a match between two of the hardest servers in tennis, top-seeded Richard Krajicek Netherlands regrouped late in the first set and beat No 4 Marc Rosset Switzerland 6-4, 7-6 7-5 today to capture the St Petersburg Open.
The match featured two of the taller players in the game, with Rosset at 2.01 metres and Krajicek at 1.96 metres.
In doubles, Nicklas Kulti and Mikael Tillstrom of Sweden downed South African duo Marius Barnard and Brent Haygarth 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 7-3.
Corretja tops
DUBAI: Fourth seed Alex Corretja has claimed his first career hardcourt title bydefeating fellow-Spaniard Felix Mantilla 7-6, 6-1 in the final of the 1 million Dubai Open.
Corretja and Mantilla, best friends and practice partners, took home 142,000 and 84,000 respectively.
Pierce victorious
PARIS: It was not the biggest title of 23 year-old Mary Pierce8217;s career, but it was special. Almost eight years after first representing France, the Canadian-born Pierce captured her ninth career title and the first in her adoptive country when she won the 480,000 Paris Open yesterday.
Third-seeded Pierce beat sixth-seeded Belgium8217;s Dominique Van Roost 6-3, 7-5 in one hour 46 minutes to pick up the 79,000 winner8217;s cheque.
